Giant Trevally caught on a popper in South Ari Atoll, Maldives Guest holding a GT caught on a popping charter with Spear Maldives

Giant Trevally are the most explosive sport fish in the Maldives. They ambush bait on reef edges, channel mouths, and shallow flats - and they hit surface poppers with a violence that's hard to believe until you see it.

We fish the outer reef edges and kandus (channels) of South Ari Atoll, where current concentrates bait and draws GTs into predictable feeding zones. Our captain reads the tide and current daily to put you on the best spots.

We provide Shimano and Daiwa popping rods rated for PE6-8, loaded with 80lb braid. Poppers range from 100g to 200g depending on conditions. If you have your own gear, bring it - we'll match the setup to what we're seeing on the water.

Best months: June through October, when the SW monsoon pushes nutrient-rich water onto the eastern reefs near Maamigili. But GTs are resident reef predators - we catch them year-round.

Common Questions

GT popping is physical - casting heavy lures and fighting strong fish. We rate it intermediate, but fit beginners do fine: the crew coaches your casting and the captain puts you on fish. If you can cast a spinning rod, you can learn this.

Shimano and Daiwa popping rods rated PE6-8, size 14000-18000 reels, 80lb braid, heavy leaders, and a full box of proven poppers and stickbaits from 100-200g. Bring your own setup if you prefer - we'll match the day to it.

Photos first, always. The crew will let you know for each fish whether it's a release or one we can keep - and whatever is kept is put to use, often shared with the local island community. Nothing is wasted.

May through November - the SW monsoon pushes baitfish onto the reef edges and the GTs feed aggressively. We catch them year-round though; they're resident fish, not migratory.

Half day (4hrs) covers the nearby reef edges and suits most groups. Full day (8hrs) lets us run multiple grounds and time the tides - serious anglers should take the full day.
