What Fish Can You Catch in the Maldives?

South Ari Atoll sits on the western edge of the Maldives chain, where the atoll wall drops from knee-deep reef flats to hundreds of metres of open blue in the space of a few hundred metres. That geography packs an unusual variety of species into one small fishing area. Here's every major species we target, where it lives, and how we catch it.

The Reef Edge Predators

Giant Trevally (GT)

The king of the reef. GTs from 10kg to over 40kg patrol the outer reef edges and channel mouths of South Ari year-round. They hit surface poppers with a violence that has to be seen to be believed. Resident fish, not seasonal - we catch them every month, with the SW monsoon (May-November) producing the most aggressive feeding. Target them on a GT popping trip.

Bluefin & Golden Trevally

The GT's smaller cousins, common on the same popping grounds and on light tackle over the reef. Bluefin trevally in particular are everywhere in South Ari and pull far harder than their size suggests.

Coral Trout & Grouper

The reef's ambush hunters. Coral trout - the bright red fish with blue spots - hold on coral heads and drop-offs from 5 to 40 metres. We take them jigging, on bait, and they're a prime spearfishing target. Superb eating fish.

The Deep Water Bruisers

Dogtooth Tuna

Pound for pound the hardest fighting fish in the Indian Ocean. Dogtooth hold on the deep drop-offs and seamounts from 50 to 150 metres. The first run of a big doggie is unstoppable - fish over 50kg live on these edges. We target them on deep jigging trips with heavy tackle.

Ruby Snapper & Big Eye Pomfret

Deep-water bottom species that come up on jigs and baits from 100m+. The big eye pomfret - that strange silver fish with the huge eye in our photos - is a South Ari specialty and one of the best eating fish in the ocean.

The Open Water Pelagics

Yellowfin Tuna

The workhorse of Maldivian sport fishing. Schools of 20-60kg yellowfin roam the open water beyond the atoll edge, and during the NE monsoon (December-April) they push close enough for consistent day trips. Casting, popping, live bait - they eat everything when the school is up. Dedicated trips on our Yellowfin Expedition.

Sailfish

The signature billfish of the Maldives. Sailfish patrol the current lines off the atoll edge and eat trolled lures and rigged baits. December through April is prime. The fight and the photo are the trophy. Target them on a big game trolling trip.

Wahoo & Mahi Mahi

The speedsters. Wahoo hit trolled lures at full sprint along the outer reef; mahi mahi school around floating debris and current lines. Both show up on trolling trips year-round with the dry season most consistent.

The Night Shift

Red Snapper, Emperor & Nocturnal Grouper

After dark the reef changes shifts. Red snapper and emperor that hide by day feed openly at night, and simple handline or light rod fishing over the reef produces fish after fish. This is what our night fishing trips are built on - relaxed, productive, and perfect for families. The crew turns your catch into sashimi on the way home.
