The short answer: there is no bad month to fish in the Maldives. Fish here don't migrate away for winter - the water stays 27-30°C year round and the reefs hold resident predators every day of the year. What changes with the seasons is which fishing is at its best. Here's the honest month-by-month breakdown from a crew that fishes South Ari Atoll every single day.
The Two Seasons That Matter
The Maldives runs on two monsoons, and they shape everything about the fishing.
Iruvai (NE monsoon), December to April - the dry season. Calm seas, light winds, visibility of 30-40 metres. This is peak tourist season and peak big game season. The calm conditions let us run far offshore comfortably, which is why sailfish, yellowfin tuna, and wahoo trips fire hardest in these months.
Halhangu (SW monsoon), May to November - the wet season. More wind, more current, occasional rain squalls. Sounds worse, fishes better for some styles. The current pushes baitfish onto the reef edges, and the resident predators - especially Giant Trevally - feed aggressively. This is our favourite season for GT popping.
Month by Month
December - March
The premium window. Flat seas, huge visibility, and the full offshore menu open: sailfish on the troll, big yellowfin schools in open water, wahoo on the reef edges. If your dream is a billfish photo, book these months. It's also high season for resorts, so lock your charter in early - our boats fill up weeks ahead in this period.
April
Transition month and quietly one of the best. The seas are still calm, the crowds thin out after Easter, and the fishing stays excellent across the board. Dogtooth tuna on the deep jigs are reliable in April.
May - July
The SW monsoon builds. Wind picks up, but South Ari's geography gives us protected water on the lee side of the atoll almost every day. GT popping comes alive - the rougher surface and stronger current put the trevally in ambush mode. Reef fishing and night fishing are unaffected and productive.
August - October
Peak GT season in our logbook. Big fish, aggressive strikes, and fewer boats on the water. Deep jigging for dogtooth is consistent. Offshore trolling still produces, but expect a bumpier ride than the dry season.
November
The monsoon winds down and everything starts firing at once - late-season GTs still hot, early-season tuna schools arriving. An underrated month to visit.
What About Night Fishing?
Night fishing works every single month of the year. It happens inside the atoll on protected reef, so the monsoon barely touches it. Red snapper, grouper, and emperor bite year-round after dark. It's the one trip we never have to check the calendar for.
