Yellowfin Tuna are one of the most sought-after sport fish in the Indian Ocean. Fast, powerful, and found in open water off the atoll edge, they put up a fight that tests your gear and your endurance.
We search for Yellowfin in open water beyond the reef edge, looking for bird activity, bait schools, and surface feeding. When we find them, we cast poppers and stickbaits into the frenzy. Live bait is also used when conditions call for it.
Peak season is December through April when the NE monsoon pushes baitfish against the outer reef edge. Yellowfin follow the bait and feed aggressively on the surface. Fish of 20-60kg are common during these months.
