Maldives vs Seychelles Fishing

Both are Indian Ocean fishing legends, both hold Giant Trevally that haunt anglers' dreams, and both cost real money to reach. Having guests who have fished both, here is the honest comparison - including where the Seychelles genuinely wins.

The Fishing Itself

Giant Trevally: Both destinations are world class. The Seychelles' remote outer atolls (Farquhar, Cosmoledo, Astove) are famous for wading shallow flats and casting at GTs in knee-deep water - a sight-fishing experience the Maldives largely does not offer. The Maldives fishes GTs from the boat on reef edges and channels with poppers - more fish encounters per day for most anglers, bigger average boats, and no seven-figure lodge bill attached. Different games, both elite.

Offshore: Broadly comparable - sailfish, yellowfin, wahoo, dogtooth in both. The Maldives' advantage is proximity: in South Ari the atoll wall drops into serious depth minutes from the islands, so deep jigging and trolling grounds are a short run, not an expedition.

Flats species: Seychelles, clearly. Bonefish, triggerfish, permit, milkfish on foot - if wading flats with a fly rod is the dream, book the Seychelles. The Maldives is not a flats destination.

The Cost Reality

This is where the destinations separate hard. The famous Seychelles outer-atoll operations run as week-long packages typically costing five figures per angler before flights. The Maldives works on day charters: our boats run $800-$2,500 per boat per day, split between your group, booked one day at a time around a normal holiday. A family can stay at a resort or guesthouse, fish two or three days, and spend a fraction of a Seychelles expedition - or fish from a guesthouse island for backpacker money.

The Travel Reality

Malé is one of the best-connected leisure airports in Asia, with direct flights from the Gulf, Europe, and Asia; South Ari is a short domestic hop from there. The Seychelles' fishing crown jewels are remote outer atolls requiring charter flights beyond Mahé, on fixed weekly schedules. The Maldives is dramatically easier to slot into a family holiday, honeymoon, or long weekend from the Gulf.

The Non-Angler Question

If you travel with people who do not fish, the Maldives wins on infrastructure: hundreds of resorts across every budget, overwater villas, house reefs, spas - your family has a full holiday while you fish. Seychelles fishing at the serious level means a fishing-first expedition where non-anglers are along for the ride.

The Honest Verdict

Choose the Seychelles if your dream is specifically wading remote flats, fly rod in hand, on a dedicated once-in-years expedition - nothing in the Maldives replicates Cosmoledo on foot. Choose the Maldives for everything else: more accessible, drastically cheaper per fishing day, better for mixed groups, boat-based GT fishing that stands with anywhere on earth, and the ability to fish tomorrow rather than planning a year out.
