Fishing from Dhigurah

The guesthouse island next to the best fishing grounds in South Ari Atoll - private charters with jetty pickup.

Dhigurah is the budget traveller's door into South Ari Atoll - a three-kilometre local island with guesthouses instead of resorts, a famous endless sandbank, and whale sharks cruising the outer reef. What most visitors do not realise: it sits minutes from some of the best sport fishing grounds in the Maldives, and you do not need a resort budget to fish them.

Why Dhigurah Works for Anglers

The island sits on the southeastern rim of South Ari Atoll, close to the channels, reef edges, and deep drop-offs where the serious fish live. Our base in Maamigili is a few minutes away by boat, so pickup from the Dhigurah jetty is quick and adds nothing to your day. The same waters that resort guests fish from $1,000-a-night islands are exactly as close to a $60-a-night guesthouse.

What a Trip Looks Like From Dhigurah

We collect you at the public jetty at the agreed time - no transfers to organise. From there it is the same private charter we run for resort guests: your group, our boat and crew, premium Shimano and Daiwa tackle, drinks and snacks included. Half-day reef fishing or GT popping, full-day big game trolling or deep jigging, or night fishing after sunset - the whole menu is available from Dhigurah.

The Budget Math

Charters are priced per boat, not per person. The 28ft vessel at $800 for a half day split between four or five friends lands at $160-200 each - with all gear, crew, and pickup included. For a group staying in guesthouses, that puts genuine sport fishing - the kind that costs multiples more in most destinations - inside a backpacker-plus budget. Night fishing at $800 for the boat is the most affordable entry point of all.

Pairing Fishing With the Dhigurah Classics

Most Dhigurah visitors come for whale sharks, the sandbank, and diving. Fishing slots around all of it: morning whale shark snorkel, afternoon popping session; dive day followed by night fishing; sandbank picnic bolted onto an island hopping and fishing day. Your guesthouse will happily cook your catch for dinner - tell them in the morning and come home with fillets.

Getting to Dhigurah

Domestic flight from Malé to Maamigili airport then a short boat hop, or the scheduled speedboat ferries direct from Malé. Once you are on the island, everything - including our pickup - is walking distance, because everything on Dhigurah is walking distance.

What to Bring

Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a light long-sleeve. We provide every piece of fishing equipment. If you have travel gear you want to fish with, bring it and we will match the day to it.
